I learned so much during the first semester being a Broadcast Technology student. I liked learning all about camera equipment and editing softwares like Final Cut Pro X. It was really fun to get to make these cool, simple videos! There wasn’t much that I disliked, but I wish we got to do more in the television studio because I thought that was very fun. My favorite project was the Six Word Story project because I had fun filming the shots, and getting to edit them with lots of freedom and hardly any restrictions. One thing I might have done differently would be going out of my comfort zone more. There were many times I felt like I might have been doing the expected material, but it would have been fun to go more above and beyond. Broadcast Technology II might be a class I would take in the future because I had a fun time in this class and would like to get to work on more complex projects. I’d like to add that this was a class I looked forward to coming to because it was very chill, and I, again, had lots of fun!

Throughout my whole Humans of Ladue project, I've learned many new things about using Final Cut Pro X, Interviewing techniques, and B-Roll filming. I had a lot of fun being creative with the different shots and editing styles. Since my last blog post, I added B-Roll to my video. B-Roll is the footage that is taken, composed of all different shots, that represents what the person being interviewed is being interviewed about. I was able to extend my knowledge on using Final Cut Pro X because this is the most complex, long project we have edited so far! As stated earlier, I also learned many new things about interviews. I learned how to set up and film a short interview, along with B-Roll, which is something I have never done before! Lauren Vanlandingham is a leader of Sparkle, which is an all inclusive dance team at Ladue! Catherine, Julia, and I interviewed her for our short interview project. For the project, we used our previous knowledge of using camera equipment, and composed several questions to ask Lauren. After, we set up a time to interview her, and we filmed the whole thing. After that, we transferred all of the footage into Final Cut Pro, and used our previous knowledge of using this editing software to edit the clips and to make everything balanced. One of the challenges for me for this project was trying to figure out which shots to cut out, since we could only use 3-5 soundbites. However, I loved this unit because I love Lauren as a teammate, and it was really interesting to get some behind-the-scenes footage! My Six Word Story was "Good Food, Good Friends, Good Times" and I filmed it using only six shots. Shot #1 was a Bird's Eye View shot of my ice cream sandwich, which represented the "Good Food" element of my story. Shots #2 and #3 also represented the "Good Food" idea. Shot #2 was an Over the Shoulder shot of me pouring milk into a bowl of cereal, and Shot #3 was a Dark Voyeur shot of my friend at lunch eating chips. To represent "Good Friends," I used Shot #4, which was a Wide shot of my friend and I jumping into a pool. Lastly, Shots #5 and #6 were made to represent "Good Times" and I did this by using an Extreme Wide shot of the Drake concert for Shot #5, and a Contract Dolly shot of my dog and I for Shot #6. I chose each shot to well represent my own life, and to be realistic with the theme of my story. I enjoyed the freedom of this project, and I think it turned out great. However, every success has a challenge. My challenge in this project was looking for an audio, because I'm very picky and had trouble finding the right one. For future students, my one tip is to be yourself because it makes it a lot easier and a lot more fun!
This week in Broadcast Technology, we learned how to handle the camera equipment, and how to record and edit properly. Mr. Goble taught us how to use an HD camera, a tripod, and other necessary camera equipment. As for filming, one of the most important things I learned was how to take a variety of shots, wide, medium, tight, etc. This knowledge will be the foundation for all filming that I will have to do in this class, so it's very important to know these basics. After filming, we edited two different projects, the "Circus Wagon" and the "6 Shots." We edited these projects on Final Cut Pro X, which is what we will use to edit our more complex projects in the future, so it's very important to know how to use the different features of that software. Doing these projects not only taught us how to edit on Final Cut Pro X, but we got to practice filming and handling the different camera equipment. Honestly, I liked doing this unit because I thought it was very interactive and fun. However, if I did this again, I would focus more on the rule of thirds, which we also learned about at the beginning of the unit. This is where the subject of our shot is not centered, but is in one of the thirds of the shot. Last week, my class continued working on different areas of our television studio. Two of which were camera operator and CG. During my time working at the camera operator, I learned how to create a focused, quality shot of the two anchors, Zakiyyah and Essete. Although I enjoyed this job, I also enjoyed working as CG. During this station, I followed the commands of the director, and was in charge of what to display on the screen. It was a big responsibility to fulfill and to be able to do, but I liked it. In the future, working at either the camera operator station, or CG station would be fun and I would love to work on them more in the future.
This past week, my class took turns working in different areas of our new television studio. My partner, Yair, and I started out practicing at the AJA station. While working in this area, we learned how to play the intro/outro clips, along with the American flag clip. Although this job was very fun, I mostly enjoyed working as floor director. When we acted as the floor directors, we directed the anchors and camera operators by using hand signals. We were able to communicate with the control room director as well. I am very excited to see where this week brings us, and to get to work at all of the other areas of our studio!
